Pre-employment Drug Tests
Interviewing for a new job can be quite exciting. You get to meet new people, perhaps even the group of people you will be working with everyday. Then comes the dreaded preemployment drug test. Most nationwide companies and hospitals do a preemployment drug test. They don't want to find out after they have hired you that you are using drugs and stealing from them to finance your habit. Most of them don't even tell you until you arrive for the interview. Then if you are using illegal substances, you don't have the chance to get them out of your system in order to gain employment.

There is usually a third party involved with the preemployment drug test due to the fact that there can be no prejudice in the results. What if the person administering the test didn't like you? You wouldn't get the job anyway. So most companies bring in a neutral party to administer these tests. They must be given fairly and impartially. They must also follow the laws abiding these types of tests.
Most preemployment drug tests require you to give a sample of urine. The tester will follow you into the bathroom and explain what to do. You cannot flush the toilet or use the sink. These are usually taped in place so if you try to use the fixtures, you will break the tape. They also add a blue coloring to the water in the toilet so they can tell if you have flushed as well and also to prevent you from collecting water from there. The plastic container the specimen goes in has a thermometer attached so they can be sure that the sample is body temperature and you didn't just pull it out of your jacket to pour in the jar.
After you have completed the test and are ready to hand over the specimen, the tester will check the bathroom used for tape breakage and if you have flushed the toilet. They will take the specimen and label and get it ready to be mailed off to their lab site. They usually receive the results in two to three days. If you test positive, you will not be hired. However, some companies will allow you to have the sample retested at another lab only if you pay for it. Some people have gotten a negative with some numbers that are different than they are supposed to be. These people have to be tested again as the first test is usually voided. They will also use a different medium if a second test is done. They can use your hair or saliva. Drug usage shows in the hair follicles for up to three months after you use the drug. Alcohol stays in your hair follicles forever. So be cognizant about which type of test is going to be used as well as how long the drugs in your system will be there to stay in the different mediums that can be tested.
These preemployment drug tests usually test for a myriad of different drugs. These include Opiates, Amphetamines, Sedatives, Cocaine, PCP, and Marijuana. Some tests can also be used to test for alcohol abuse. Results can be detected within fourteen to fifteen days and can stay in your system for up to a month. Some drugs longer depending on how long you have been using them.
So if you have a job interview coming up, make sure your system will be clean of all drugs used. If you aren't sure, reschedule your interview so you don't make a fool of yourself and miss getting a good job in the process.
